FAQs

The K1 is built with safety in mind. Insulation material and a double walled construction will drastically reduce the radiant heat transfer to the outer body up to a maximum oven temperature of 220°C / 428°F with the hood closed for no longer than 2 hours

No.

For the best results, it is recommended to use natural lump charcoal.

The charcoal can be ignited manually with natural fire starters in the unit or lit via a charcoal chimney and transferred into the unit.
Please refer to our YouTube video guide

It is recommended to leave the hood open for quicker ignition of the charcoal, as well as opening the bottom vent to position 6. Please see our YouTube video demonstration for a step-by-step guide for igniting your K1

Yes, wood can be used. It is recommended to use wood chips however appropriately sized pieces of wood are okay to be used.

The K1 is built to retain heat and only requires a very small amount of charcoal to reach +250°C/482°F. We recommend starting with 200-300grams (7 oz – 10.5 oz) of charcoal. Overloading the K1 with greater volumes of coal is not recommended as this will result in a waste of coal and can result in product damage and / or spoilt food.

When not in use, allow the K1 to cool fully and clean the cooking surfaces. Store it outdoors under cover with the purpose-made K1 cover. Our covers are made from 450 GSM UV-protected, water-resistant material, though humidity and condensation may still occur depending on climate. Remove the cover periodically and wipe the unit down to prevent moisture build-up.

Once cool, clean the K1 using mild detergent, warm water, and a soft cloth or scourer. Avoid phosphoric-based cleaners; use a gentle bicarbonate soda paste for tougher areas. Refer to our cleaning demonstration video.

Once the K1 has fully cooled, you can safely remove and dispose of used charcoal and ash with a Hot Coal Bin or similar heat-resistant container. If you’re using untreated lump wood charcoal or pure wood, the cooled ashes can be placed in the garden. Avoid disposing of ashes from briquettes or any charcoal containing chemicals, as these are not suitable for soil or plant use.
Using fresh charcoal for each cook is recommended. However, you may reuse leftover charcoal if desired—this will not affect the unit, though used charcoal may retain flavours from previous cooks.
For a step-by-step guide on safely removing and managing charcoal, please refer to our YouTube demonstration video.

The air vent is made of alloy; therefore, it is recommended to use an alloy polish.
